BJ and the Bear Rig

BJ and the Bear Rig

As a child I grew up loving semi-trucks.  My love for big rigs began, like most of you, from my dad being a truck driver.  My dad and I LOVED watching BJ and the Bear every week on NBC.  We still love the opening theme and hearing those air horns.

I retired from the Navy after serving 20 years.  My jobs included maintenance on F-14 Tomcats, flying in a HH-60-H Seahawk helicopter as a door gunner, rescue swimmer and crew chief.  About six months before I retired I ran across a 1989 K-100 cabover Aerodyne and had to have it.  My wife wasn't too happy when I pulled up in the driveway with it, haha.   Owning and driving that K-100 brought me back to the days of BJ and the bear, and my love for semi-trucks.  My wife use to call it the "Grocery Getter".  You see, I never wanted to run to the store for her until she learned how to add, "You can take your rig".  That was all I needed to hear and I was out the door, cranking it over to go 3 miles down the road and grab a gallon of milk.  WOW what a blast!!

So as time grew closer to my retirement from the military I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do for my next career.  As other retired veterans know, the military pension for 20 yrs served is not enough to retire off of.  (And my wife said I had to still work) So I threw around some ideas and one was being a truck driver.  We first talked about being an owner/operator but trucking for yourself just isn't as good as it use to be.  So after weighing out the pros and cons, we decided putting my truck to work wasn't for us, and I'd just continue to run it to the "store”.  So after I retired I decided to drive truck for a local company.  That just brought my love for rigs to an even higher level.  Then I drove over the road for a short period, but I really enjoy being home every night so since then I've stayed local.

So, how did I end up with this BJ and the Bear rig? Well, I purchased this rig in 2012 from a friend, Chris  Andreychick, who had purchased this truck from Sagehorn in 2008.  It was in quite a few pieces as Chris was in the process of doing some restorations to it.   Chris ended up moving out of state for business opportunities and because the truck was in so many pieces he didn't have the time to put it back together and take it with him.  It took us over a year to get it back on the road with the help of a lot of great people.  The first show we got the truck to was June 14, 2014 (Macungie, PA).  And I am currently still in the process of fine tuning it.

So to answer the most frequently asked question, is this one from the TV series?  No it is not one of the three original trucks used in the TV series, but to us, it's close enough.   For those of you who don't know the story about this truck, a man by the name of Paul Sagehorn and his father Craig, who live in Wisconsin,  made this a replica truck in 1999, when there was no original TV series trucks out on the road.  This truck is known for being in truck shows and at charity events and at times BJ McKay (aka, Greg Evigan) would appear at those events with Paul and Craig.  In the past, Greg has driven this truck in parades, been photographed in it and has autographed the sun visor.    This truck is a 1984 K-100, replicated to look like the truck we all are known to love. (The show ran from 1978-1981) This truck has been all over the internet since Paul brought it to life in 1999.   Currently there is ONLY one original BJ and the Bear TV series truck fully restored and running up and down the road.  It is the 3rd series BJ and the Bear truck which is owned and operated by Paul and Craig Sagehorn, located in Wisconsin.   That truck came to life on American Trucker TV show which aired Feb 2011. Paul sold this replica truck to Chris Andreychik, whom we purchased it from in 2012.

**per an article in the "Truckers News" Dec 2007, Paul and Craig Sagehorn also own the only known to exist 1974 Kenworth 925A from the 1974 TV series "Movin On)"

Sorry for late update. I had an offer I couldn’t refuse and sold this beauty. It saddens my heart to see her go but believe I sold her to good man who will love her as I did. I will keep this website up for pictures for all to enjoy and I am still selling T-shirts for anyone who would like one. This truck had given me so much joy, taking me back to my childhood as well as meeting the famous Greg Evigan and watching him drive her around. We had hopes of doing shows with him but unfortunately did not get to. He is a genuine nice guy and if it hadn’t been for this truck I would not have had the opportunity to get to know him like I did.

Again, thank you all for the interest and hope to eventually add more pictures we have for you all to enjoy.

Keep on Truckin!!

We would like thank everyone who has helped put this truck back on the road
